Hornet (John Grearson)

Ashton Keynes:  This morning there was much activity in The Lotts Play Area with  European Hornets patrolling along the hedges separating the play area from surrounding gardens.  Later in the day I found a male Hornet feeding on Ivy flowers.  Also present were quite a few wasps, all males judging by their long antennae plus a single specimen of Colletes hederae, the Ivy Bee.   Most of the hornets flying in the play area were also males finding and mating with new queens.  The Ivy Bee was first discovered in mainland Britain in 2001 and is rapidly spreading northwards.        John Grearson
